Fall is short. Winter is long.
Fall is a short season for getting ready and a long winter for finding out whether you did. Nobody wants to make the January phone call: the burst pipe, the mouse in the flour, the stove that won't draw, the cold night with no lights.
So I wrote down the getting-ready part, in the order I'd do it, with the tested numbers next to the old ways. Where they agree, I tell you the old way. Where they don't, the tested way wins.
